My First Shots with the Fujifilm X-E1 and 18-55mm Zoom

Well, I love this camera even though I'm not very good with it. I missed a lot of shots as I fumbled for this or that -- it's just different enough than the X100 to throw me off but I still got some nice "keepers". Had a great time shooting it and I think this camera and I are going to be more than just friends, lol. All the photos in this set are from camera JPG's -- NO RAW!

These shots are from a very exciting time for me, and for my home of Kennett Square, PA. Our world-famous mushroom festival is beginning with parade, we have the "First Friday Art Stroll", and the re-opening of the improved concert venue in town known as "The Flash" or "The Kennett Flash". 9 pieces of my photography are hanging as the sole decorative images in the venue so I'm psyched.

Here's some photos starting with one showing some of my work hung. The piece in the middle I made a special trip back to an abandoned asylum to get because the director really wanted it and the other one I had was not suitable for large printing (in this case 24x36 inches). The two pieces flanking it are older shots of mine. Then there are some shots from the parade, which I only attended briefly, then some from the opening night of the club.

This lovely lady next up is one of my clients when I was doing weddings and I did both her engagement and wedding shoots. She always looks good with NO retouching! I just happened to run into her on the parade route.

I usually just act with chutzpah. I stepped out on the parade route like I was an "official photographer" and the pretty EMT on the old engine told the driver to stop so I could get a shot. Thanks!

Okay John Griggs, now that it is tested,
What do you think of the X-E1, can it be bested?

=G=

To best it you must
In size and in weight
Your hernia to bust
And that won't be great!

In fact I'm amazed
At the sharpness I see
By the kit lens unfazed
To any degree!

Evangelist Gary,
Your gospel is true
I now have nary
A dispute with you.

So something wider
I just must obtain
14 millimeter
Now picks at my brain.

Have you one for sale?
To vend ala carte?
The Fuji won't fail
To further my art!

Impressive.
I'm shooting raw with my new X-E1, but should definitely try the jpgs too.
That 18-55 is a jewel, it reminds me my first good lens, an Oly 14-54 (on an E1). It's probably better, cause my 14-54 was a bit soft at the longest end. And it has got a very functional OIS too!
Doing some simple editorial stuff for a local magazine, I'm still intimidated by it for doing some street. There, I've found the X20 to be a very competent (and easy) one.

Thanks, Alessandro! And thanks for the shout on flickr as well. I really am a reluctant and oafish street photographer, lol. It's not something that falls into my "natural zone" to coin a phrase.

It really is a very, very nice lens though. I was showing it to a friend and saying, "Nikon and Canon ought to be ashamed of those kit lenses they bundle with their sticky zooms." This lens is both mechanically and optically very nice to use.

I can see why the X20 would be good for street though. Small, competent and greater depth of field from it's smaller sensor should make nailing focus less taxing.

It's great you have the gig with the magazine! My main work has been prints but I do have a photo being used in a book about "Artist in Light" Bruce Munro and a local botanical garden has used my work. But overall I'm an art photographer working to get my stuff hung in places. Still having fun with the other kinds of photography also though!

Sorry John, I wish I could be nice,
The 14mm is gone replaced by the 12mm Zeiss.

I have packed the 35mm, it is boxed and ready to go,
It will soon be at the Post Office to be shipped off before the snow.

so, what are your first impressions of the x-trans vs non-?

(Sent from my EVO via Tapatalk)

I'm selling my micro four thirds gear and buying into X-mount and the X-Trans sensor. I think that says it all, lol.

But seriously, it is the pixel-to-pixel acuity that will make my large prints better without carrying a large heavy camera. I print "beyond" the resolution of my cameras when making 36x24 inch prints at 300 dpi and extra acuity in the existing pixels is a good thing.

A fabulous series, John. I guess (it's hard to pick one) is #11. I love the lighting of that one). And the piano of course. Can't see that one enough, even if it is a photo of a photo.
Peter
