Samsung My Samsung NX20 has arrived!

Location
Central Ohio, USA
Name
Andrew
Thanks to @Blooper7206 and their post on the NX10 they got....I started looking at the Samsung NX system again.

I was able to score an NX20 and 18-55 kit lens.
When i got it, the camera looked to be in great shape...but I found out that the EVF has a glass element issue and while it is capable of being used for framing a shot, critical focus and exposure cannot be relied upon.

Never the less, I got a chance to use it today...and I can say that I am very pleasantly surprised by the camera overall.

Very happy so far with the performance. Seems very snappy.
Like the Retro and Classic (monochrome) "picture wizards" presets from the JPG engine. First look at the RAW files are very promising, even for a 2012 sensor....it des well for itself. Will share some pictures I took today, and will update my thoughts on the NX20 from time to time as well.

first 3 are with the "Retro" wizard setting, 18-55mm kit lens - only cropping done. SOOC JPG rendition

I especially like the "retro" ones, which have a sort of Kodachrome look about them.

The 50-200mm lens arrived today...if the weather cooperates, I might take it out tonight after work and see about running through a few tests.
That's great, I will be interested to hear your thoughts on how it performs as that is a lens I would love to own also. I have just received my NX30 with another 18-55mm lens on it, the lens has a metal mount compared to the plastic mount that was on the lens for the NX10. I have not had a chance to try out the NX30 yet but I will post some photos when I do . Whilst I remember, I wish you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!

Quick test with the 50-200mm, just to make sure it is working proper. JPG "Classic" picture wizard with the contrast maxed out. I always like to see what kind of monochrome a camera can produce. Jury is still out on this one as I will need some more testing. Crop, grain and vignette added to these by me in Lightroom. Otherwise OOC settings.

I was on my way to a work outing and I snapped these from the car while I was waiting for the traffic light to change.

Initially it kind of reminds me a little bit (the mono rendering) of an Agfa monochrome film... APX 400 possibly.

Here are some images I took with the Fuji film simulation of the same name - I think you can see the resemblance in some of hte character. On the Samsung, I may need to turn the contrast down a little to get closer - as the images below I think have some darker blacks than the APX 400 would.

Further testing of the 50-200mm...when put up against the 18-55, it falls short in sharpness....but nothing that cannot be accommodated with some post processing.
Definitely weaker at the longer end at around 135 and after. It also is not as smooth as other consumer lenses like the Nikon 55-200, 70-300 DX lenses.

A few samples from walking about today.

A nice set of photos, the lens looks like a great performer to me.

Well I have been trying out my NX30 and compared to the NX10, it is up another level as regards to image quality and features. I would say the build quality of the NX10 feels more sturdy and solid, the NX30 feels very light and a bit plasticky but still solid nonetheless. It's great having a fully articulated screen that is a much higher resolution than the NX10 and it is also a touch screen which you can use to change functions and focus etc. The EVF is also better resolution and you can pull it out and turn it up almost 90 degrees for a waist viewer type use. The AF is also a lot more sophisticated and very fast, it has a hybrid contrast and phase system which just adds to my amazement at how advanced the Samsung cameras were. Anyway here are a few photos

Here are a few quick snaps using some manual focus PK lenses on my NX30. A Pentax 50mm f1.7 and a Cosina 20mm f3.8. The first three photos were taken with the Pentax and the other two with the Cosina. The NX30 has focus peaking and is very easy to focus these manual lenses on.

Since my NX20 has a defective viewfinder, I went looking for a replacement. I like the Samsung that much that I’m willing to get another, but want the EVF.

Found an NX30 for a steal and will get that and the 16mm prime for those times I need a little wider.

Once I see that the NX30 is up to snuff, will sell the NX20 to offset some of the cost.

I can see the Samsung being a competent little setup. I’m enjoying it, even in its crippled state.

I can understand exactly how you feel because since I discovered Samsung just recently, I am totally hooked with the system, it was so advanced for it's time. The menu system graphics are so cool and the i-function is amazing. I now have a NX10 body, a NX30 body, a 16mm prime, two 18-55mm (one has i-function) and I have just bought a absolute mint 50-200mm for just £60. The only thing that concerns me about the system is the slight fragility of the electronics which can be a bit glitchy but the photos they produce are more than worth the hassle
