Hi

I have only a very amateur knowledge of photography but I am retired and now unfortunately on my own. I need something to fill my days and have determined that I will take up photography as my hobby and hence the reason for joining this forum.

I currently use my S7 mobile to take my photos but want to purchase an SLR camera. The choice is mind-boggling and would very much appreciate advice as to a good choice of camera.

Best regards Giovanni.

Welcome to the forum. If you let us know your previous and current experience with cameras such as which cameras you have owned or currently have, I'm sure you will get some useful advice from us all here and we're happy to help.

Welcome!

My advice would be ... don't be too hasty in thinking that an SLR is going to be the right choice for you. Take time to look at the alternative types of camera available and understand the differences between them. And you've come to the right place to ask about these things.

To offer guidance it would help to know the type of photography you are hoping to undertake (travel? landscape? friends and family? air shows or birds?) That will make a big difference to the correct choice of camera for you.

Another consideration is how you feel about carrying gear around. If you don't want a lot of weight on your shoulders, that speaks against a system camera like an SLR.

Greetings from Norway, Giovanni! :drinks:

Most camera systems made after 2012-14, I would be consider mature enough to handle anything you could throw at them in regards of General Purpose Photography, with some exceptions when it comes to shooting sports and wildlife/birds.

Welcome! We're a friendly enough community here, hopefully we can help you enjoy this hobby. Depending on where you live, is there any kind of photography club or brick and mortar camera store at least where you can try out the various options?

Welcome aboard.

My Daughter is in a youth group, I take pictures at their events. Several of the members have asked to get started in photography, and wanted Film SLR's. They've been doing great with them. I gave away a Nikon N8008s with AF lens to one, a Pentax ME Super with 50/1.4 manual focus to another. Chose cameras with auto-exposure that could also be used manually.

I worked in camera shops "decades ago". Tried to line up camera to suit a customers desire.
I always started with "What is your Budget" and "What kind of Pictures do you want to take". "Have you used anything before this".

The same generally holds true. I'd get answers from "I want a camera like the one in the movie King Kong" (1970s) to "I want to learn how get a picture like this".

This forum covers a lot of different camera types and systems. Lots of "showcases" for you to look at.

Giovanni, the choice of cameras today is mind boggling, and the advice that you will get is is equally diverse! One tip I can give you is to go through photos on this forum, and when you come across some that you like, and the sort of thing you might take photos of, jot down the make of camera and lens used. This information is beneath most photos. The problem is that all modern cameras are capable of taking excellent photos, and there is no 'best'. Do you have a nearby camera store? Perhaps buying a used one to start with might be useful to you. I wish you good luck, and a very warm welcome to the best forum ever!
