Feedback Nice bright look at new site

I have to agree with Christilou that it's quite a busy look, especially on a phone. Lots of different shades of grey, dividing lines in grey, blue and orange, arrows both pointing to the poster's name and just randomly up for quotes... It does feel a bit aged, I'm sorry to say.
If you're talking about the "Dark" theme, it's the same grey color scheme as before (the old "Dark" theme that was only being used by 31 people) but with the orange highlights (which will be likely reworked).

I'm not sure I know what you mean about the arrows and quotes; XF has always had an arrow next to the quoted persons name, the sidebar of the quote is the only part new and that orange color will be likely reworked.

EDIT: ... and most of the orange is now gone from the "Dark" theme along with some tweaks to make it closer to the old "Dark" theme.

I'm on the light theme. I hadn't noticed the arrow previously, maybe it used to be a less noticeable color than blue?

Also, it was probably a bit ungrateful of me to not even mention the things I really like, most important of which is the full width image on mobile devices!

And about the different shades of gray: this also might've been around previously, but I just noticed it now: after a post there's a dark grey (or thick medium grey?) line. Then a white thicker line, a thin medium grey line, then a light grey bar with poster's name and details, then another thin medium grey line, and then the white box containing the post. Could this be simplified to make it look cleaner? The white line above the posters details, for instance, doesn't add much in terms of the user experience, I think?

I agree, on a computer screen it doesn't bother me nearly as much. The box shadows around posts (with the thicker line on the bottom) are not my favorite feature, but the tiled featured image field on the main page looks really nice, and the overlays on hover only looks clean and allows you to appreciate the photos.

I hadn't noticed those box shadows. It's the kind of thing that once you notice them, it's all you see. It does seem that there is a bit more delineation of spaces....little boxes around everything. I think the mind just starts tuning that stuff out once you get past the initial change.

Yeah, the featured photos flow correctly on a computer screen, but look a bit messy in an iPad.
I don't have an iOS device at the moment, but, by any chance, when viewed on the iPad is the information 'overlay' at the bottom of the images being constantly displayed? The same thing happens on my Android devices and Firefox. The bad news is that displaying the overlay constantly, instead of just doing a mouse hover like on the desktop, is a XenForo software intended design decision. If you visit the "Media" link, which is totally stock, you'll see the same thing happening there. The good news though is that the front page is something that I wrote for us and, though I modeled it after the XenForo default designs, I can tweak it's behavior as we see fit. With that in mind I've been thinking about suppressing the 'constant overlay' from appearing. Portable devices would still see the preview images and could click on them to be taken to the attachment but they wouldn't see the overlay information; desktop users would still get the mouse hover overlay like they do now.
One question for @Kevin , how do you now do ‘undo rating’ if you hit the wrong thing?
That's... a good question. I just tested and the answer is to click the "Like" button again in the bottom right corner of the post.

To expand upon that... doing a quick click of "Like" will give a "Like" reaction while doing a hover over the "Like" will give a pop-up of different reactions to choose from. Your reaction will then be shown in the bottom-left corner of the post and the "Like" link in the bottom-right will now show up as bold to indicate you've already reacted. If you click the bolded "Like" link again in the bottom-right your reaction will be undone.

Yes, see example below. The overlay is nearly as big as some of the images.

Yikes, that is not what I was expecting! I was kind of expecting the overlay but it also looks like the javascript library being used to position the images is not kicking in.

Is that running the Safari browser on iOS or are you using a different browser. I'll need to bump that up on the 'To Do' list so that even with the overlay being suppressed that the images are aligned like on other devices / operating systems.

can it be set-up without an overlay....or an overlay if hovered over?
On desktops the overlay only appears if hovered over, on touch screen portable devices (and, apparently, Firefox), the XF crew chose a design system that always displays the overlay. I used the same design system as XF so that it would be consistent on every page (eg: how it behaves on the home pages versus the "Media" pages, etc.) but I see that I need to undo that way of thinking. I'll be likely putting a change in soon to not do the overlay if it can't be done via the hover.

Okay, part one should be done... if you're using a device with a touchscreen and if it is a device that the software thinks can't handle 'hover' events for displaying the overlay then you should not be seeing the overlay at all anymore.

The change works on my Android devices and on Firefox desktop with my Dell XPS that has a touch screen. Chrome desktop on the XPS is working fine as it always does and is displaying the overlay only when a hover is done.

Can one of you iOS guys reload the home page and just confirm if you still see the overlays or not? I'm at the office today with no Apple products available so I can't do much checking there until I'm back home and dig up an old iPad or something to test with. I still need to check into why the alignment for @theoldsmithy is off in his screen shot.

EDIT: I had a remote helper send a few screen shots from his iOS device; the overlay is gone but the images aren't being aligned. That's telling me that Safari for iOS isn't responding to the javascript library at run-time. Oh, Apple, you have become the IE6 of the modern age. :( I'll be looking into this one.

That’s on Chrome, Kevin. I’ll try some other browsers too and report back.

I like the dark theme; it seems to allow the content to predominate. I’m not a fan of sans-serif fonts but it’s clearly legible. At least this font differentiates between a lower case l and an upper case I. Number 1 is distinct as well. Number 0, capital O. The weight of the font is heavy - thick strokes. (I’m the son of a typesetter — a now defunct profession).
