Back to square one with this lens. My very first Nikkor lens. It's nice to have it once again.

Because of its price and plastic fantastic status, as well as it’s not F1.4 aperture (as if F1.8 is not enough), people don’t give it the time of day but it really is a great lens, absolutely lovely rendering, especially when used with the earlier Nikon DSLRs and the sun stars (if you like that sort of thing) are first rate, right up there with the much more expensive lenses.

I have both the 1.8 and the 1.4.
My advice to people is to stick to the 1.8. It is cheaper and from f/2.8 onwards is very little difference (if any) between them. I use the f/1.8 most of the time to save some weight. The only advantage of the f/1.4 is that is slightly sharper and more contrasty at f/2 - if I know that I will photograph in galleries or churches, I bring the f/1.4 along.

I also had the f/1.8G for a while. I bought it insanely cheap and used it for a year or so before selling it and keeping the older D lenses. Sharpness was great and so was contrast and quiet operation. But unfortunately it had a tendency to hunt in low light and got some unfocused pics on my F5 and F90x. The older F4 had better success rate (!) but still I didn't like it.

Enjoy your f/1.7, it's a great lens.

Ps: Something that I noticed, if you use the F5/F6 cameras, older non-D lenses don't focus on infinity! From a point onwards, newer non-D lenses work well with them. I had an early 50f/1.8 (non-D) that did not focus at infinity and one newer non-D that does. My 35f/2 (non-D) does not focus on infinity with the F5 (but works well with my F4 and F90x). All D lenses work well with all cameras.
