So finally it seems we have the Z50 II upcoming.

On a familiar rumor site he lists these details as of now:
  • Updated body design
  • Expeed 7
  • Flippy screen like the Z6 III
  • USB-C
  • Will use the same Nikon EN-EL25 battery
  • Official announcement: soon (before the end of 2024)
  • Same 20.9MP DX-format CMOS sensor as the Z50 (not confirmed yet, hopefully my info is wrong, and they will introduce a new sensor – Fuji for example, is already using a 40MP sensor in their latest X100VI camera)
  • Update: no battery grip will be available for the Z50 II
  • Update: compatible with the new Nikon Imaging Cloud
They are of course only rumours and no one knows if any of this is real. I for certain hopes at least the sensor will have image stabilisation. Otherwise I get very frustrated at Nikon for not releasing any good APS-C body :) well, time will tell. Probably we will know more details quite soon.

I agree - just a "refresh" of the existing Z50 seems a bit of a waste....they need something a little more "D500" like in performance. People have only been asking for that since Nikon released the OG Z50. Since getting the Z8, I'm not longer desirous of a Z version of the D500, I certainly would have been had it come out even a year ago.

I often think about how many people Nikon may have lost to Fuji or Sony when it comes to a small APS-C camera, while the Z50 and Z fc are fun and capable, they are certainly lacking in some ways in regards to a true workhorse with features some would consider a must.

Nikon is also badly behind Canon's APS-C R cameras; R100, R50, R10 and R7, with just the Z50 as competition.
Yes, too bad they don't put a little more effort in the system. I would be quite happy if there was just one really good body. They have made such fine lenses to put on at least. Time will tell.

I am hoping that because they are at a 1:4 model disadvantage vs. Canon, that there are one or two models in the near future.

...have been quiet for a while, and now I find this on that "common" rumour site... 🤩

Well, I've been pretty interested to see what Nikon would do and in most respects, I do like what I see. I've always been happy with the IQ of the original, so don't mind them using the old sensor - I still see it as one of the best balanced ones on the APS-C market, resolution notwithstanding (it doesn't bother me at all, to be honest). Everything else, including the AF and general speed increase in most respects, are what you can expect from Nikon nowadays.

However, the camera's grown and put on bulk; not excessively so, but it's still almost 25% heavier than the Z 50 (550g over 450g). If there was something I really like about the Z 50 (especially in comparison to its FX siblings), it's its light, compact body that still balances amazingly well with big and heavy lenses. I have no doubt that the ergonomics of the Z 50 II will feel very familiar, maybe even better - but the weight increase on what would have to be my go-to travel camera doesn't appeal.

Still, pricing is extremely reasonable, and there's even a kit option with the very desirable Z 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom at an attractive price - even now, without any kind of discount.

So, here's what I'll actually do: My Z 50 is actually showing signs of wear (mostly from my habit to carry the camera in the hand for hours on end in all - almost! - all conditions). So I'll start to "risk" it - above all, I'll seriously check its weather resitance together with the Z 18-140mm I just mentioned, not in a deluge, but in autumn's and early winter's frequent rains and drizzles. If they both go down (i.e. drown - ha!), I know that there's something of at least similar quality with lots of small, but helpful improvements out there (for me, most decisively, there's an even brighter viewfinder and a flip screen that helps me protect it as well as shoot at more angles) that can replace the lost kit neatly and immediately without breaking the bank. But if the Z 50 and the lens survive the torture test I have planned for them, I'll stick to the older model - for my usage, between the Z 50 and Z fc, I'm well served.

M.

I really liked the look of the original Z50 when it first came out until I realised that it had a stupid flip down screen, which just did not make sense. If this rumour is true, I hope it has a proper articulated rear screen :)

Tokyo press release said that it will have auto focus on par with the Z9.

Even with that, I think I’m a pass on this iteration.

I'm probably a buyer when it has IBIS, global shutter like the Z8/Z9 or better.

That would be the ultimate travel camera for me. I’m still not seeing a need for more megapixels, 20 and good in low light I’ll take over 24/26/40 and struggles with IQ.

Regardless of my thoughts, Nikon will get there and they will do it right, hopefully. Just longer than most would have liked.

  • Dedicated Picture Control button allows for one-touch access to inspiring color presets, Imaging Recipes and custom Flexible Picture Controls, all in real-time.
[quote from website]
That dedicated Picture Control button — the first on any Nikon camera — is the Z50II’s most exciting upgrade. Pressing it enables a real-time preview of “up to 31 built-in color presets” so you can see how each style affects the “color, tone, and feeling of the scene” before you press the shutter. The button is similar to the film simulation dial on top of the Fujifilm X-T50, and the Z50II’s styles can be expanded by downloading “Imaging Recipes” to the camera through Nikon’s cloud services that have been developed by “notable creators,” says the company.

==================

Not enough megapixels and oh dear, they're all going the way of picture controls to appease the Instagram crowd 🙊
