At work I inherited a 400/2.8 AF-S Nikkor. It is big and heavy. I would not have bought one.
If you are getting paid to take Sports photos, and the lens turns a profit- great. With the high ISO of modern cameras, I can use my 500/8 Reflex Nikkor hand-held without problem. Same would be true of a 400/5.6.

Photo gear can turn a profit???
Yes. Yes it Can.

I have ~$1500 tied up in these 8 Sonnars. And about 10 hours in each one.

They sell for more.

I sold SOnnar conversions and a couple of other lenses to pay for the M9 ($7K) and the M Monochrom ($8K). Cost me a total of $4K, and the time and effort (Fun) of converting them.
