I think this lens is kind of underrated, especially considering the price and the still somewhat compact dimensions. For people like me, who don't really shoot wildlife often, this is a nice affordable way to get more reach.

I have had good luck with the 75-300 on my E-M5.3. I do find that using electronic (silent) shutter does help some for maintaining steadiness with this combo (and also when you are afraid of spooking critters, as with the below shot). The below image is pretty awful, pose-wise, and his body-language said, "Please leave me alone and go away," so I did, but I did take a few shots.

I think that this illustrates the good IQ you can get with this lens, even at 300mm. I usually try to stop down to f8 when there is enough light, as here. The images are original jpgs, a downsized (to 1600 x 1200) and a 100% crop of the original.

I'm really happy with this lens!
I don't have any qualms shooting at 300mm and get results 'sharp enough' for me.
I shoot, by default , at 1250 ISO to compensate for the slowish apertures, confident that I can always cleanup the noise in DeNoise A1

I'm a fan of the 75-300ii for motorsports too. I don't know whether you post process but I've found that Topaz DeNoise further improves the image. Here's a comparison of a SOOC JPEG against a DeNoise version at 300mm with no other PP changes.

I’ve been wanting to try Topaz. Unfortunately, my Mac is too old for the current version. I’ll download it when I upgrade the computer.

So I've shot with several tele's over the years. The 75-300ii, 40-150R, P45-150, the 40-150 2.8, the P100-300, and the PL100-400. While you really got to work at it with the 75-300ii, the value proposition is just insane. Not to mention the pound for pound comparison. The 40-150 2.8 and PL100-400 bring the results more easily, but they put a much bigger dent in your wallet and strain on your back. All of these were shot with mechanical shutter, but with the Haoge grip on the E-M5iii for more stability.

Nice images! I am a big fan of the 75-300, although I have never used it for close-up photography. One question I have about these images - are they cropped? If so, how much? Knowing this would give us a better idea of how useful the 75-300 is for "macro" vs other lenses.

Some of them are, but it’s relatively mild, for framing purposes. I’d say at most we are looking at 25% just to adjust composition.

Oh, OK, since you insist! (has some cropping, Topaz DenoiseAI - 6400 ISO!). I got lucky - didn't notice the frog till I was on my computer later! (not sure what happened to the EXIF - Affinity Photo perhaps, or Topaz?). Anyway, used an E-M5.3
