Visited Kalgoorlie, Boulder and Coolgardie over the weekend. (I spent the first 16 years of my life in Kalgoorlie.) The area is one of the most productive gold mining areas in the world. There are many fine buildings erected around the early 1900's that are well maintained. The area had many deep mines but now open cut mining is in favour.

By jove, that is a mighty fine image of one pretty impressive pit. I've never been there but those names ring a bell. I'd really like to see a larger version and some more images.

Yes it's massive. The pit is oblong in shape and is approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and 570 metres deep. At these dimensions, it is large enough to be seen from space.
