Pentax Pentax Q samples

Looking back through this series which you posted a few months ago, Walter, I'm surprised - and impressed - by the quality of the 'standard zoom' you were using. For such a small lens, and a small sensor, it really renders nicely.

Out and about today with the Q7 in my pocket, such an easy camera to stick in one's pocket, and so useful.
I took two different kinds of pictures today.
The first, a landscape - looking southward from the mountains at the border of Oregon (where I live) and neighboring California.

The second a monochrome conversion from a RAW file, done with Silver Efex, of a trout, in the fish section at the market. I remember taking photos similar to this, decades ago, with my film Pentax SLR's, using Tri-X 400; the results from the Q7 are rather similar, in some ways.

Both taken with the 01 Prime lens.

Cheers!

Its a nice combo. Initially I was a bit unhappy to get the kit zoom (would have preferred the 01 prime) but its actually been a great lens. Can definitely recommend it (+ it can be had for cheap). Hopefully I'll get the long tele zoom delivered next week - be interesting to see how it compares. I've been looking at the prices for the wide-zoom - they are a bit nuts! Maybe I'll try the fish-eye and see how it de-fishes. Will also keep an eye out for a Q7 body too - that way I can keep the 01 on one and a zoom on the Q-S1.

Image-wise, its a bit of a wash - my m43 pics definitely feel a little 'zestier' (for want of a better word) but for the size, its a worthwhile trade-off.

I think some of the Q weirdness is the shot-to-shot lag when shooting DNG, it feels like you end up missing every shot but with a tiny sensors you just have to be close enough and the shot will be fine when the rest of the camera buffer catches up. I should just try shooting jpegs next time - see how they experience compares.

Some shots with the 50mm equiv 01 prime. The lens correction is pretty wild when the raw processing is doing its thing. You can still see the curves at the edges, not great to see on a nifty-fifty.

I need to try Aperture or another RAW processor. See if they remove the bendy lines. Its pretty bizarre for a nifty-fifty equiv.

I agree, Walter.

Nice colour signature though.

That might even have worse barrel distortion than my Olympus FTs f/2.8 25 pancake. And it's pretty ordinary where straight lines are near the edges of the frame.

I just can't get enough of the colours from Pentax (especially in RAW).

Beautiful DoF from such a tiny sensor at minimum focus distance :)

I need to get some apochromatic macro adapters to play with more magnification.
