Ricoh Pentax rumors

Although it's "possible" that the rumor is accurate, I doubt that Pentax is announcing 5 new DSLRs this year. That's a lot. I suspect it's more likely they are adding 2 or 3 new DSLRs and keeping 3 or 2 of the current line (making 5 total).

I won't object to 5 all new DSLRs from Pentax this year ... that just seems like too many based on previous Pentax releases and the number of releases from other companies.

you should be able to figure it out...
I just hope the "GRDV" is not a 28mm FOV camera.

It always has been - I'd be pretty surprised if they'd change that now or most of their loyal customers might not upgrade. OTOH, that was Ricoh and this is Pentax, so Ricoh may not be looking at this as the new GRD - or maybe they do? I guess it'll become clear in time but that time in't yet. I'm gonna give the Nikon a pretty good workout, but if I decide I want to buy it, I might hold off until we know more about this Picoh/Rentax model... Between Fuji, Leica, and Sony, it seems the market for fixed lens 35mm cams may just be spoken for. The 28 market is still sort of open with a real specialized camera from Sigma (great IQ, but painfully slow, so only good for some types of photography, Ricoh's existing GRD and GXR models, and now the new Nikon. Seems like more room to play for new entrants. But I guess stuff changes fast enough that anyone might take a shot at any of these segments. Nobody saw the RX1 coming either...

Heh, I was just bustin' chops wrt the 28mm FOV... I just don't have much use for it, and I guess that I associate that FOV with kit zooms.

Here's speculation from out of leftfield: Pentax already developed a pancake 40mm lens for the ill-fated K-01, the Pentax 40mm f/2.8 XS SMC DA. It would be interesting to affix that to a compact body.

It would seem (to me) interesting and uniquely Pentax to find a way to use an existing pancake lens, rather than develop a new one for this camera. The closest thing in the current Pentax stable for a 28mm FOV on APS-C is the DA 21/3.2 Ltd.

Not really. It would still need the flange distance for the the mirror box of their DSLRs. So it would not be a very compact body.

There is a lot of competition right now in the mirrorless segment and Ricoh/Pentax no longer have any truly viable options. I'd expect to see more mirrorless options than DSLRs, but maybe not. 5 new DSLRs sounds like a lot.

Pentax 40mm f/2.8 XS SMC DA was designed for the K-01, a mirrorless body.

I agree that the body would be rather chunky, but a tweak to the design of the lens would help it fit better. Pentax wouldn't actually need to use a K mount. Size-wise, I'm thinking more like Nikon A, not Sony RX100.
