The Spotter-in-Chief and I took a walk on the Ballston Lake, NY, bike path. We stopped for a moment. She looked up and said, "Look, an inverted rainbow! . . . No, it's a circle."

We occasionally get that effect in the winters here, usually when it is very cold. As far as I know it is caused by ice particles very high up in the atmosphere. I have never seen them outside of cold winter days though. Interesting.

That's what I thought -- ice crystals way up high -- but I wasn't sure.
