I watched this a couple of days ago. If you haven't heard about it, Jackson has had access to hundreds of hours of archive footage of the British troops in WW1. The film was originally jerky, grainy and monochrome. He has cleaned it, slowed it down, colourised it and added audio soundtrack, with forensic lip readers working out what the men were saying. On top of that are spoken testimonies from veterans. The whole thing is stunning, but horrible at times (lots of dead soldiers from both sides). Transforming film to colour has really made it all much more real, and the conditions far more awful. I would seriously recommend watching it. It’s available on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and in some cinemas.
