May I draw us away from the technical for a moment and introduce a remarkable person, whose experience shows how brutal the photographer's art can sometimes be. Those of you who receive Channel 4 in the UK may have seen a documentary about Giles Duley, a photographer in Afghanistan, who lost both legs and an arm when he stepped on a mine while photographing with an American military unit. He was about to start another assignment to photograph Afghani civilians, many of them children, who are blown up every day by these mines and for whom the hospital and rehabilitation services are minimal. He wanted to bring attention to their plight. He promised that he would return to complete his assignment, and he did, then understanding their position in a way which he would never have imagined… Please have a look at a photographer at the sharp end. I'm sure I saw an X100 around his neck at one point.
