The Ring Sanctuary at Pömmelte, Germany, is a recreation of a late stone age / early bronze age "woodhenge", similar in function to the world famous Stondhenge but made of wooden poles. It was used by Bell beaker culture people for about 300 years (starting around 2200 BC), for rituals, burials, and probably feasts as well. Then it was ritually demolished, with ashes and sacrifices buried in each post pit. This has allowed archaeologists to recreate it - although the cross beams, red paint and carved symbols are based on speculation. After being demolished the remaining circular mounds and trenches were occasionally used for ceremonies by different cultures for another 400 years or so. It's a pretty cool place to visit!
