The seed pods of Umbrella Magnolia begin to form after the flowers are fertilized in mid Spring. The pods will eventually take on a deep red hue, and mature pods fall to the ground in the perpetual propagation cycle - where they are then squished by unwary hikers and cyclists.

On a hike up the relatively steep Humbug Mountain trail, on the Oregon coast. The trail snakes through a verdant world, the mountains at this part of the coast get a decent amount of rainfall, at times it feels more like rainforest than PNW (Pacific NorthWest).
