I have found my iPhone sometimes gets confused over portrait/landscape orientation. After some experimentation I concluded that
When TAKING the picture. The phone/camera must be as close to vertical (whether portrait or landscape) as possible when you touch the shutter release.
If not almost the right way up ,when trying to view the captured Image the phone sometimes has no clue which way to orientate it. But sometimes it chooses correctly and you don’t think anything is wrong. Only when displaying on another device you can end up repeatedly turning the device and never getting it the right way up.
Since I found this problem. When using my iPhone for photo AND video. I always make sure the camera is upright to start with.
The best way to replicate the issue is when taking a photo or video straight down off a bridge or similar.
This is the problem as shown on my phone. I appreciate the issues of the sideways avatar might be completely different.
