This is interesting. What exactly is going on up on the roof?
The owners of this old property have had an extension built on the side. What you are seeing in the photo is the start of the thatching of the roof, so that it will blend in. The roof has now been completed, but the painting is not quite finished yet! I will post another photo when the scaffolding has been removed.
It is not straw that is used for thatching, but a water reed (Phragmites Australis), mostly cut in the Norfolk fens! There are lots of thatched cottages in the village I live in, mostly paid for by Oliver Cromwell as a reward for some of his officers after the English Civil War (1642-1651).
