POTN is Closing - Welcome POTN'ers curious about Cameraderie

Cameraderie Members: Some of our Cameraderie members are also members at POTN [Photgraphy-on-the.net], a photography community that has been around for over 20 years. Pekka, the owner / admin / coder, of POTN has announced that their intentions are to close the site within the next several months. For a community to have been online that long while remaining independently owned & operated by the original founder is amazing.

Some POTN members may be checking out Cameraderie, and are encouraged to join our community if they like the vibe of it, so if you see some new folks please be sure to give them a welcome.



POTN Members: Welcome! If you are curious about Cameraderie or any parts of it, feel free to poke around, check out the conversations, and browse as much as you'd like. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask. If you don't want to create a member account here yet, you can either use the "Contact Us" link in the footer or you can ask me at POTN; I'm "KW802" over there. There are sure to be some differences between our communities, especially since POTN is using custom software with some cool features (like the nifty post attachments "gallery" slider), but we try to be a friendly place that welcomes all members and photographers of all levels of skills & experience and always open to suggestions.

Tbh POTN has never been on my radar, but looking at it now, I don't know why, it looks like a cool place. Too bad it's shutting down!

This board is the result of quite a few mergers in the past (mostly brand-specific boards being merged into a brand-agnostic forum that was, at the time, called "SeriousCompacts" but had already outgrown its initial audience and scope). We're still, though very slowly, cleaning up and merging old threads to avoid confusion - but often, brand-specific threads are hard to merge into larger threads. It's also difficult to merge single image threads that have sparked some conversation into larger threads - we'd have to disrupt the conversation or the target thread (often, both). So, things are still pretty cluttered, especially in the brand-specific sections and in the older parts of the forum. Thankfully, active threads tend to float to the top of any list anyway. If you're unsure or need help deciding what to put where, the moderators (and many long-time members) are happy to help.

I'd like to point out the preference for and predominance of themed threads on this board - so, you basically try to find a suitable thread to post in instead of starting a new one. This means less individual, personal threads - and, to a degree, also less categories and topics; that said, there's no reason not to establish new threads, categories or subforums - but they have to appear necessary (not just catering to a single person's needs, that is), not duplicate existing ones and fit within the scope of images we feel comfortable showing to all audiences. This is an international board catering to lots of different viewing habits and tastes - so, sometimes, limitations apply. It's all covered in the terms and rules. Anyhow, we're currently thinking about how to better support personal projects in the future. That may open up new opportunities for people with very specific skill sets, passions and portfolios - again, within the scope of the forum.

I'm looking forward to seeing new faces and images!

Thank you Matt,
I was very active in Potn posting pictures in general themed threads like 'Post your pictures of _____", "Show us your ___" and not in the individual threads. I also liked the competitions, the colors game, A-Z, the Photo below me, Celebrity game etc, I also posted a lot in the Glamour/Nude section that I don't see it here, not a big problem though.

I was less active in talking threads as in real life I don't talk much either so I guess I'll be sticking in the Photography Galleries.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out the "Photo Challenges" area, Matt has been incredible in keeping them going including the "Daily Challenge" that he is up to 1,289 consecutive days! 😲

Thanks for the heads up Kevin, and welcome POTN folks. I was out of the office last week traveling for work, and when I got back in today, there was some new guy sitting in my aisle. I’m like, who the hell is this guy? Well, if work was as nice as Kevin is, and gave a heads up, I’d know who the hell the new guy was 😂
