After a three-week layoff, our river trip took us some 5 or so miles upstream to Cochiti Canyon. Navigation was very tricky due to lower water levels and therefore lots more above and below water sandbanks. But our 18 seasons of experience paid off handsomely.

Sightings included Great Blue Herons, Canada Geese, Western Grebes, Spotted Sandpipers, Ravens, Turkey Vultures, Cliff and Violet-Green Swallows still feeding their young, various ducks, and a Beaver and Avocet. And there were butterflies and some wildflowers at our luncheon stop.

It is always an amazing experience to see the ever-changing new channels carved by the river, and be amongst the rock cliffs and other elements of Nature in stillness and solitude.
