Pushing the limits . . . a story of failure

4 am. The spotter-in-chief, returning from the bathroom, says, "Look out that window . . . "

A full moon, clouds scudding across it . . . a highwayman's moon!

A lyric springs to mind:

As I was a-goin' over the Cork & Kerry Mountains
I met with Captain Farrell, and his money he was countin'.
First I drew my pistols and then I drew my rapier,
Sayin' "Stand and deliver, for I am your bold deceiver."

I can't NOT shoot it . . . you understand?

The RX10 Mk4 will do, I think. It knows I have no tolerance for cameras that say No. See: In which I do battle with the Nikon’s camera software engineers, and they win

It's warm. Mama Robin, who is nesting under the eaves of our side door, takes flight as I slide out into the night.

With the first shutter press, the RX10 reminds me that it is shooting video. Nuts.

But the way I have the video configured, it clicks off one still frame:

Rotate the dial in the dark, find P mode:

But I want to avoid those powerlines if I can. Other modes yield:

The camera is clearly struggling for exposure and focus, and nothing I do seems to help.

The sun porch looks good in HDR, though:

In the end, I romance a shot with Luminar, but I can't remember where the "remove powerlines" setting is:

You know what Jock, yesterday all across Australia the big photographic event was the “Pink Moon” that was was arising. Clear skies too. I had my Tamron 100-400mm. But I didn’t bother. Didn’t want or need the anxiety of not getting it right. Oh I’ve been there....

Jock, thats something you need to just stick on auto, forget trying to choose your own, and focus directly on the moon itself.

My Nikon Did OK at full zoom, but the moon wasnt pink by the time I got round to it. Should have taken the trouble to get out the tripod and then I might not have cut off the bottom. Poor old moon.

I think you need to play a smarter game with the spotter-in-chief to avoid these situations in future.

Could you create a diversion next time? Something like, "Oh look, it's George Clooney!!" or, "Can you smell smoke? I think there's a fire somewhere!" Or maybe you could feign injury?

(don't let her read this)
