Leica Q3 replaces Fuji X100V?

This post is a response to @bluzcity 's question if the Q3 is going to replace my Fuji X100V.

It is indeed my idea that I won't keep both. I hate the idea to have to choose which camera to take, let alone to carry 2 cameras. The X100V and the Q3 both have to serve as the EDC camera (every-day-carry).

So what would I miss by selling the X100V and keeping the Q3?
  • The Fuji's picture profiles. The Q3 has some in the form of Leica Looks but they don't come anywhere near the X100V's ones. However, I almost always shoot raw, I still have to try to make some nice B&W presets for the Q3.
  • The optical viewfinder. Which I stopped using soon enough, I prefer the X100V's electronic viewfinder even though it's not great.
  • The unobtrusiveness ot the X100V. With the Q3 I stand out more as a photographer. Not to an unacceptable degree, but still.
  • The X100V's lower weight and size. I can carry the X100V in my hand with a wrist strap, the Q3 is too heavy for that (for me; I'm not going to say that all the time). On the other hand, I can carry the Q3 with a neck strap and not have the camera settings go all over the place, which happens with the X100V all the time when dangling against my belly.
  • The 35mm of view. However, the Q3's frame lines are a great help when I want to compose in that angle of view, and the effective background blur will be about the same when applying the 1.25 crop for the Q3.
The combination of the Q3's lens, sensor and accurate AF delivers a far superior image quality IMHO, especially at smaller apertures like f/5.6 and smaller, where the X100V's AF fails miserably and I hate the X100V's MF experience. With the Q3 I hardly ever need MF. The X100V works best at larger apertures between f/2 and f/4, which is good for street photography but not for more static scenes; still the Q3's image quality is also better there. The Q3's AF is about the same as the X100V for my kind of action photography (street).

The Q3's viewfinder is much better. The user interface is excellent. The Q3's image stabilization is a welcome addition, though not perfect. The Leica Fotos app actually works quite well, the Fuji app is gruesome.

A bit short on time now, so I'll leave it at that for the moment.

Thank you for your detailed thoughts process. I agree with you and have, at times, thought of selling my X 100. So far the two primary reasons I haven’t are the weight and color profiles. Again, love what you are doing with your Q3. cheers!

I thought many of the same things you are thinking now. For me; ultimately I couldn’t justify having both, and parted with my x100f not long after acquiring my Q. I do miss my 100f from time to time, but I wouldn’t repurchase it, unless I parted with the Q for some reason. As for picture profiles, although I believe I may be migrating over to Adobe, I can use DxO to apply any of the Fuji presets to a Leica RAW (or any of my cameras for that matter), so no loss there.

Sold my X100V after getting my Q2 without regret, same here, I could not see a situation where I would take the Fuji over the Leica. I have contemplated selling my Q2 because I do not use it nearly as much as I do my M bodies. I keep it mainly for those times that I want AF. There are lots of presets out there to get that Fuji look if desired.
