If you've been at al following any of my threads you'll know that I've been experimenting with older compact cameras here lately.
Having used the Nikon Coolpix A, the P7800, and now the Ricoh GR Digital III....my thoughts fall back on the abandoned idea by Nikon of the DL series. There is a thread already discussing these when they were announced and I'll post that link here:
I thought of reviving that thread, and if it makes sense to merge it, mods, please feel free...just figured I didn't want to be the voodoo priest and resurrect the thread if that was improper.
Anyway....there is a lot that I LOVE about the Coolpix A. Honestly, if you put a pop-up EVF, a tilty screen for low angle shots (I'd prefer the one that is one the Z8, but would settle for a tilty only if cost/size is a consideration) and an enhanced PDAF auto focus. Put in the latest EXPEED engine for the APS-C (yes, I'm fine if they keep it APS-C / although I bet that the Z series FF chips are probably doable at this point) and I'm happy boy.
To the DL series, APS-C (for the 18-50 and 24-85) or 1" (the superzoom) sensors have come a long way since 2016 when Nikon was thinking about bringing them out. It dawned on me that the fun and performance that I'm seeing from the Sony RX100 Mark III - I feel Nikon could do it better. I much prefer the Nikon color science, the handling and the menus. The Sony is good, but the Nikon could be great.
Looking at the market, I think the time is right, especially if they redo the look and feel of the cameras and make them look more "retro" or analog inspired looks. Even with the dreaded power zoom, I think that a lot of people are wanting something else outside of the Fuji/Sony ecosystem for a small coat pocketable set of cameras. I think Nikon could do well in that space. I know a lot of people that left Fuji for the Nikon Df and now the Z fc and Z f.
The 18-50mm and the 24-85( the one I would pick) as well as the super zoom (24-500mm) would be awesome right now and I would be a buyer of at least one. Maybe even a 4th model for the 28-200mm crowd and if it performed really well, I can see me leaving the Olympus EM1.2 and 12-100/4 behind if they can get performance and IQ as good or better than that pairing.
Just rambling and putting my thoughts out there for you all...sparking conversation and soliciting others thoughts.
