The different focal length matters too. The 60mm is going to be even more shallow and might require even more stopping down, even when stepping back. 45mm seems to be a little more workable for me than the 60mm was, but it could just be a me issue.
Yes I was amending my post as you were typing this!

As you say, stopping down the aperture would also help, but that will likely mean a slower shutter speed, maybe even a tripod. Or additional lighting.

I don't think it's just you, close up magnification shots are easier to do than macro ones ;-)
