Got out yesterday to give the recently procured S3 Pro a run. Snagged a well used Nikon 18-55 AF-S to go with it...not very please so will be looking to get something else in this range for it, but it did what I needed for the testing.

Enjoy!

Nice set. I finally parted with my S2 pro to fund some other photo gear, but I did enjoy using it. What’s the big difference between the S2 and S3? Anything noticeable in use?

IQ doesn’t seem to be much different. The S3 feels more responsive. It no longer needs the CR123 battery. The rear screen is better for review of images and it has a built in vertical grip.

The used price difference was $40 between the S2 and S3, which seems reasonable to me.

I just need to figure out how to do the mirror lock up so I can clean the sensor. This S3 I have is riddled with sensor dust!

Oh man. Hope you can get to that sensor! All else fails, you can always tempt fate and do a bulb exposure.

Found it.
  • Put mode dial to MANUAL
  • Hold the flash exposure comp button and lcd illumination button together while powering on the camera with no lens attached.
  • Hit the shutter release and the camera will go into mirror up mode.
  • Clean sensor (blower brush, dry sweep, wet sweep as needed)
  • Shut the camera off to return to normal function mode.

Instructions/diagrams can be found on page 125-129 in the S3 Pro Manual as well.

Looks like another big difference, for me at least, is the S3 is supported by DxO, whereas the S2 wasn’t. I always just shot jpgs on the S2 because of that. Oh lord…gas is kicking in.
