SC Photo Challenges

Thanks for the starting up the SC Salon, BBW and Amin. Cool idea and look forward to participating and checking out the better images.

Quick question on the other challenge - are we still keeping it around? I hope so!

One idea I had (maybe not an original thought!) is that we could differentiate the original challenge by focusing that one on images taken during the challenge period. I personally really like the idea of having a challenge that encourages me to go out and shoot. We could maybe extend the time period to 2 weeks, just like the Salon, to help make sure more people get a chance to get out and capture some images (maybe have the timeframe offset from the Salon, so they end on different weeks).

What does everyone else think?

Ah, sorry, think I missed some conversation that has already happened on this.

I guess having two salons, even with different criteria, would be a little much?

I think for right now it might be. I'm not the keeper of the challenges here or anything like that...but considering the changes of late, it's probably good to keep it simpler for a while.

As for using the salon challenge as a means to get out there and shoot - by all means, that is the main point of it all. For those who can't, at least they can delve into their archives until next time.

That is a great idea and what I will do too when I have the time. Digging photos off the digital shelves doesn't improve your shooting and is okay in a pinch when you don't have time but still want to be involved. Shooting however is better. No shame if the topic is something you don't have access to in the moment [or two weeks given], the archive dive is still effort.

I suck at shooting with that kind of specific purpose in mind. Don't enjoy it as much either. So I'll always dig into my archives and see if I have something on-point. If not, I hang my head in shame and go look for something... Or more likely, skip that challenge.

I used to hang out on the Canon forum on DPR back when I had an S90 and they ran a challenge like this every week. I like the format - a bit of work for each week's moderator, but not much for anyone else. But some good work always came to light.

The great thing about the salon style challenges is that they remove the labourious task of setting up a poll every time, plus the selection of a winner or even podium positions if it goes that far is just a simple case of the images that the curator liked best.
