Appreciating Art - Tate Modern - UK2016-16 by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

2016 July - UK holiday - Tate Modern - Monument for the Living 2001-8 by Marwan Rechmaoui.

“This sculpture is a scale model of the Bur El Murr building in Beirut, Lebanon. The tower was owned by members of the el-Murr family, a prominent political clan. Construction began in 1974 but it was left unfinished after the outbreak of civil war. Originally an office block, it was only ever used as a sniper outpost… It is now seen as a memorial to the internal conflict that has never been really resolved.” Description at the Tate Modern.

Pilot's warning: doing turns about a point, using the beautiful Lady Liberty as the point, is not advised in today's post-911 climate!

Egyptian Sphinx - Fontaine du Palmier - PARIS-2018-51 by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

The Fontaine du Palmier (1806-1808) or Fontaine de la Victoire is a monumental fountain located in the Place du Châtelet, between the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Théâtre de la Ville, in the First Arrondissement of Paris. It was designed to provide fresh drinking water to the population of the neighbourhood and to commemorate the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is the largest fountain built during Napoleon's reign still in existence.

In 1858 during the reign of Emperor Louis Napoleon when the Place du Châtelet was expanded and the fountain moved to its center during the renovations of Baron Haussmann. At that time the base was also decorated with statues of Egyptian sphinxes spouting streams of water, sculpted by Henri Alfred Jacquemart.

L’Acteur Grec - PARIS-2018-57 by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

L’Acteur Grec (The Greek Actor) by Baron Charles Arthur Bourgeois was first presented at the 1878 World Fair where he was awarded a third class medal. The actor, a mask raised on the forehead, repeats his role by reciting his text written on a parchment.

First erected at the theatre of the Odeon, it is réérigé in the garden of Luxembourg where I photographed him.
