This was one of those “I can see my house from here!” moments. Said house is the right hand side of the white building in the left distance. Behind it is the hill of Mow Cop, topped by a Victorian folly (fake ruined castle). In the right distance you can just see the monument to John Wedgwood, a local mine owner. Most of it was destroyed by a gale in 1976 (see here).

Don't touch! I may be wrong, but that looks like Giant Hogweed, a plant that has invaded the northern US and can cause serious burns and even blindness, at least according to some toxicologists.
