I was a little lass in the 50's and there was no supermarket or pond where I lived, so never saw this kind of scene

Yus, being on the edge of a field dogs often run around there and facing the south it gets battered by winds which blows mud on them. It's all a dull (dry mud) grey with patches of green here and there.

The neighbouring farmer is always a bit slow with maintenance!
Edit - by way of explanation to the uninitiated, these are water troughs for the dairy cows (which are currently indoors for the winter). There are other, working troughs elsewhere in the field.
