My uncle in Alsace (France) near Srasbourg had one of these converted into a grocery shop. He used to circle around all those small villages in the surroundings that had lost their last (and sometimes only) grocery shop. The van was fully packed with everything needed for daily nourishment including fruit and vegetables. In my holidays I sometimes accompanied him on tour. And was fascinated by his humorous way of dealing with the elderly ladies who came shopping and always wanted to have a "special offer". One incident I remember quite well was when a lady complained that 65 cent was a bit much for a cucumber. He smiled and said: "Well, you're such a nice lady, you'll get three for 2 Franks.
To my surprise she was completely satisfied and never complained.
