My more modern version is "Measure seven times, then right before you're ready to cut, measure twice more just to be certain."

Might be why it takes me so long to finish projects.
And then when it doesn't fit, say "I don't understand, I measured it and measured it"...at least, that's what happens to me!

Martin, it took me a long time to learn how to cut to exactly the right length, and then a bit longer to learn how to cut just a tiny bit shorter so that the bloody thing would fit without using a sledge hammer ...

I assume we are talking about power saws here. Don't you have to factor in the width of the blade? either cut on the inside of the line or outside of the line for the right fit.
