Then on to the yard where there was quite a bit of activity as the shuffled things around for the days operations.
Climax #9 was not under fire the week we visited. However it is fully operational and can be fired up and put into service. If things go as planned I believe it will see regular service next year as the excursions will be changing a bit.

Here Shay #4 is taking on coal while #5 moves one of the newly restored vintage freight cars.

As #4 pulls forward it is revealed that it's actually a double header. They do this for the trip up Bald Knob when crowds necessitate adding more cars than a single engine can push up the mountain.

Looks like Shay #2 took the freight car from #5.

Now #5 isn't pulling anything, looks like the Engineer wants to check some valves.

We sure did not expect to see this! Here is the Climax #9 that is not being used being shuffled into the shop for a blow down. I had never seen a Climax in motion before so this was quite a treat. It's not the same thing as seeing it move under it's own power (I'm told it has a VERY distinct sound), but it was nice to see the driving gear in motion.

Just when I thought the action was over the crew decides Shay #2 needs water.

Then number 4 again. If I didn't know better I would have thought the crew was putting on a private show for me. My wife was fairly certain that they were trying to keep us from getting lunch. Turns out this is just normal daily operations.
