Possibly a Brewer's Blackbird? Check the beak size and shape, and the color of the female's eye. We have a lot of them in the neighborhood.

Thank you! I thought that they looked off for common grackles and they certainly didn't sound like them.

I don't have any shots of the long-billed and this possible could be a juvenile long-billed, but the coloration on the chest, wings, and sides of the head look to be short-billed.

That's crazy. I wonder if other birds make fun of their beaks. The long billed variety have to be a tripping hazard.

Dang, I am 0-2 today. I just checked Cornell's website and listened to the calls for short-billed vs long-billed and I think that the above was a long-billed.

Fiona spent some time there last summer when she was at a biology summer camp at UC Davis. She loved the raptor center.
