I have absolutely never seen black ducks congregate in groups like these before. Moreheens are very territorial and combative, there are 2 females and 3 males from what I have been able to identify and one Little Grebe.

And 2 more were joining in the group as well.

Believe it or not, I actually did some 'birding' yesterday while at my sister-in-law's for dinner.
How many parrots can you spot in this picture?

One on the left side, the second more to the right and up, the third one sitting with his head up behind leaves next to the second, one sitting behind some leaves on the middle right side with a red beak peaking out, fifth one sitting upside down on the right side. (Also I think there's a parrot head peaking on the leftmost side a bit up. I think there is a faint outline of a parrot below the 2nd and 3rd ones sitting on a branch in the shadow,)

Cormorant among the stars.

I have learned this week that this Cormorant actually loves this specific tree when I found him for a 2nd time in the same spot in 2 evenings. I would not have thought I would ever say I am going to Taunton for wildlife.

A few weeks ago I caught the last Supermoon of this year by chance and the moon was super bright with a really lovely purple winter sunset. I was trying to frame the Cormorant in front of the SuperMoon but backing away was making the Cormorant smaller in the frame and a tree was getting in the frame. I thought about making the best of what I had at the moment and I actually love the green foreground tree on the left and the bare tree on the right. The moon is a bit off-centre from the Cormorant but that's nothing I can do about that.
I knew what the judge was going to complain about BUT I still submitted it for November open competition at the camera club. No surprise that he was disappointed that the Cormorant is not bigger in the frame. I was already stretching the IBIS at 4 and a half stops for 1/15 sec exposure with f 2.8 at 300mm equiv. If I had my Oly 100-400mm f 5-6.3 with me at 400mm I would have to push over 6 stops from the IBIS and it would also increase the size of the moon and not just the Cormorant, losing most of the purple sky to a hazy white.
People always seem to want full on portraits of wildlife and don't even bother wanting to see the environment or the conditions the subjects are in. (But I guess it's just me on that opinion/perspective)

Trying to get closer forced me to shoot through even thicker part of a tree trying to frame the Cormorant against the moon. I don't know how I could have done better then learning how to levitate.

This is as much as I would be willing to crop before it gets to pixelated from 20 MP. I really wanted to stay here 20 more minutes so that the moon would raise high enough behind the Cormorant to get a clean composition but my Little Legs was barking at me from the top of her little lungs to get moving and head home... She won in the end.

Good Evening,

With the local temps at all of 24* F this morning, the kayaks are in dry-dock until next March, at the earliest. I'm spending more time now in my woodlands, trying to find the most recent owl nests in the larger hardwoods. This local was taking a break in between the field mouse lunch line...:)

Regards,

Edd
