Been getting into bird photography because my wife has gotten into birding. Now we can go places where she can observe and I can photograph. Main tool will be the Pentax Q7 using adapted lenses via the K-Q adapter. Been doing a lot of backyard testing. Here's the Q with the wonderful DA*50-135 F2.8

And here's a snowy owl captured with the Q7+HD 55-300 WR. At 300mm the equivalent 35mm focal length is 1410mm! I'm using a monopod for stability with image stabilization turned on:

I am getting into birding too, especially keen on capturing birds in flight. It is a challenge....especially with PD tremor. However, the 5d mk3 has been a revelation for me. I have been using it (hand held) in combo with the 70-300L Canon lens......but I have a hankering for something longer AND prime! Been looking at the older FD Canon fit 500L. It means an adapter and manual focus. The could be disastrous as a purchase if I don't get on with the manual focus. I can only do it on a tripod. However, for tracking flight of a fast bird it would be cumbersome on 3 legs rather than hand held. Have also looked at the Sigma 150-600 but not sure of quality.

I'm not doing birds in flight….yet. But if I do, I'm going to give the Nikon 70-300 CX a long hard look. On the 1" sensor of my Nikon 1 it is 810mm EQ. Getting that kind of reach on my Pentax APS-C is going to cost more and be much bigger.
