sometimes lighting strikes 3 times, cross your fingersIt was quite unusual that I saw two! And I understand the 'someday' syndrome. I have never succeeded in shooting a pileated woodpecker and just the day before in the same patch of forest there was one in reasonable distance for my Sony and great light. Of course I didn't have my zoom. I had nothing but a fixed 28 mm with me. I am hoping it will return to the area. I was looking for it yesterday when I saw the owls.
Are you positive it wasn't dead?it's pretty hard to catch a fully sleeping bird, it must have been a long day, unless the other eye behind was open
No, I only witnessed this juvenile hovering around while the adult was finishing off last bit of dead water fowl. Then it came swooped down and took over. The adults (there were pair), the female left a bit before the attack. The male then followed.Narin, where you there to witness that kill? What was it? Great shots by the way
Youāre right. The bird was just about eye level, perhaps 1.5 m from the phone (held in my outstretched hand). As I got closer, he skirted around the trunk to āhideā and then returned to his pecking as I walked on.He didnāt seem to care about you at all if you were able to take a photo with an iPhone. Do they not scare easy?
It was a remarkable experience. I didnāt have my camera with me, but, as is said, the best camera is the one you have in your hand. Best place, best time, best camera. I donāt expect this to happen again.I wondered the exact same thing. I can't get close enough to frame one that size in the photo with 600mm equivalent around my house
