And, okay, it's challenging enough identifying birds from my Bird Books, but trying to identifying relatively newborn fledgelings is beyond me: what kind of young bird is this?

It's 90 degrees. Heat must have some effect on Cardinal's wariness, because this Cardinal didn't seem to care how close I got. The other explanation is that he is just getting used to seeing me. I can't count the number of shots I have of this bird over the last few years. Typically he'll maintain a 40 foot or so buffer. Today that dropped to about 10 feet with no sign of fear. Maybe today he was just daydreaming about being a duck because it is so hot and got lost in the moment.
