Something about this photograph - perhaps it's the way the amazing eye of this bird appears to be staring at me - really gets to me. It's a great shot, Hendrik!
And finally, persistence pays off: if the patient avian photographer stays quietly hunkered down for a long time, they may spot that rarest of all birds: a duck with one head...and two bodies!

I've always thought these were Red Headed Woodpeckers, for obvious reasons. Tonight I was corrected by a bird person. It is a Red Bellied Woodpecker. Hopefully someday I will get a shot of their belly to find out why.
So here I am, standing under a tree, minding my own business, when this dove guy starts cooing (loudly) at me. As soon as I glance up, he shuts his beak, trying to look away. "Who, me? I didn't say anything. I'm not even here."

Out at my local morning stop for waterfowl shots I spent about 20 minutes waiting for a Lesser Yellowlegs to strike the ideal pose close enough, and with enough animation for him to be interesting. He never did. But this little sparrow sat over my shoulder singing it's heart out the whole time. The lyrics sounded like "Hey look at me, I'm up here in this tree".
At one time, there were estimated to be fewer than 30 Nene left in the wild. Now there are over 3000, and the status of the Nene has been eased from endangered to threatened.
