Some of each. The heron shots were with monopod. Most of the rest were handheld. I use a monopod when I can, especially if I will be shooting for an extended period. But haven’t found it useful for most BIF situations or quick grabs.

Thanks. Yes I've used a monopod at times but agree no good for BIF. Sometimes when I'm tired I just can't hold the M1 Mk2 with a long lens like the 100 -400 still. Maybe I'll try with the M5 Mk3 when I get it.
 
Walking up the small rural lane that runs into the foothills of the southern Oregon Siskiyou mountains, I saw several killdeer, doing their 'broken wing' routine - to distract potential predators, including myself, from venturing to close to where they have built their ground nests.
