This fella was at my back door when I came back from a cold winter run. Smaller birds hang around the house (even though I haven't had a bird feeder out in at least 6 years. As do some feral cats. Not sure what he was hunting after when I showed up.
I spooked him and he flew up to a nearby tree. I quickly ran inside and got my camera - a Nikon 1 V2 with the 70-300 lens that I haven't used in months. I reversed the hood, took off the lens cap, turned the camera on, and quickly fired a couple of shots before the camera said, "You should have charged the battery, you dolt." I ran back inside to get another battery with 5% instead of 0% but it was too late - he was in hot pursuit of a smaller bird.

Been busy on a video project and haven't posted in a while. I spend 2 hours with a group of 6 egrets (reduced to 1500 pixels long side) and will be posting more from that amazing experience:

Miguel, it would probably have worked better at f/8 @ 1/1000 and ISO 200, but I understand the very fleeting nature of these moments. No time for contemplation!
