Thanks for sharing the back story; I'm slightly ashamed to admit that in spite of this being inappropriate, the folk name made me chuckle for a moment - but it *is* painting the right picture.It was an afternoon with boring light.
This is the "Heemsteedsebrug" crossing the "Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal". It's better known as the "Plofsluis" (that sort of translates as Kaboem-lock").
During WW2 is was meant to block the Germans going to Amsterdam by boat, coming from the river Rhine. The idea was to blow it up, should the Germans appear.
As you can see, it never happened...
Due to costs and other problems, in 1981 a bypass was dug as can be seen on the far right.
