We were in Minneapolis this last weekend and were staying downtown, which if you know the town and I didn't, is right on the Mississippi River. I don't know what I thought the Mississippi would look like that far south of its headwaters, but I didn't think it would be this big. The Stone Arch Bridge is a former railroad bridge dating to 1883. It has a lovely curve to it as it crosses the river. The other bridge, aka, St. Anthony Falls Bridge & highway 65 bridge, opened in 1918 and is currently closed for major reconstruction. The falls themselves have been protected and reconstructed over time. The rock layer underneath them is softer than the top layer, causing it to collapse, with the result that the falls tend to move upriver. There is also a large lock on the west side to enable navigation upriver. It is really an impressive civil engineering site. And all this is on the site of what was once the largest wheat milling complex in the world.
