Church of Toivakka, small village in Central Finland. The church itself, nothing too much special, picturesque wooden church.

BUT, the wall paintings, those are, eh, quite punk. Or what say you? 😂

These are really unique murals. What are they trying to depict? “Native heathens” finding salvation or something? It wouldn’t surprise me if some people would be offended by its almost cartoonish depictions of some of the races/people. Odd nonetheless!

Glad you asked 😉

The artist Pellervo Lukumies, who painted these 1972-73 was a son of a previous parson or priest of Toivakka church. Famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (who was originated from this neighbourhood) planned a modernisation of Toivakka church, and the task was to renovate murals in the church. Pellervo 'misunderstood' the assignment and painted murals like this. Pellervo had studied earlier in Ateneum, Finnish art school, and his teacher was academic Sam Vanni, said to be father of Finnish abstract art.

The scandal was obvious. Then parson of the church banned Pellervo to come in to the church. But nowadays these murals, inspired by Bible, pop-art and Kalevala, our national epic, are tourist attraction first grade. Odd and unique, for sure 😎
