On Sunday I had a very rare chance to see a meteorological phenomenon I have only seen (and noticed) a handful of times in my life where clouds become so dense they look like mountains and are surrounded by a lack of OR very few spread thin clouds, making them stand out even more. I've seen it happen more often in the area I live in and I think it has to do with the valley we live in.

These clouds are so dense and tall that other smaller clouds have to pass around them like jet streams around solid objects, it's a very interesting phenomenon to look at with a telephoto lens, though 150mm was all I had with me at that time.

I tried chasing it as the sun was getting very low into the sunset, illuminating only the top of the cloud. It was getting difficult to find a clear view of the clouds themselves given how large they were and not being able to get enough elevation to clear out most buildings, trees and light posts.

Towards the end, the clouds were starting to look extremely dramatic and what got my attention even more is the light of the sunset not only bleeding the clouds into red and pink but where the clouds were less dense the light would escape and you can see the red tint inside the clouds in the shadow.

I zoomed in and cropped in to show the difference between the sunset highlights and the blue shadows and the bleeding of the pink. While this kind of phenomenon can last for a while (around an hour) the composition and unique moments can last up to a minute or two, there are not a lot of 2nd chances if you see or want something very specific. I think these last 2 images could make for a very interesting print, especially large print.
