Hey Mike, that was exactly what I thought when I saw them! My reaction was like: no way! Look at this Mammatus clouds!
But then I said to myself, no it can't be. Mammatus are always associated with Cumulonimbus and severe convective weather. They are often found hanging at the base of a severe storm.
That day we had no storm, no Cumulonimbus around, no signs of rain or anything like it. Hence, I concluded that the clouds were Altocumulus, which thanks to the spectacular light looked like Mammatus.
