Pre sunrise over East Grand Traverse Bay this morning. This is as good as it got. The sun never had a chance to show it's face, hidden by encroaching rain clouds thickening from the west. In short, this is the bright spot on an otherwise dreary day.

I'm wondering if we get this kind of light when the full moon approaches and skies are clear? It was the same here.

It seems that the striking sunrises and sunsets in our region recently are probably due to an “afterglow” associated with the January eruption of the Tongan volcano, Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai. Apparently aerosols from the eruption are present in the stratosphere and dispersing light.

Thanks for that. Interesting, as the colours have been especially intense. Reminds me of when I was a child, and there were bad bush fires in Oz, and our skies were quite red/orange from the smoke haze. Can't remember year though. But the effect was similar, but probably more intense than what we've been seeing lately.
