Whilst it's for subjective tastes, FWIW I've seen some flare from those older F3.5 Elmars which I think is quite wonderful.
I actually don't mind the flare from these old lenses because it's smooth and soft - but in this case, it was just overpowering.

The crucial thing, however: You can sort of gradually reduce its impact with something as simple as "dehaze" (while I used more of that than usual, it's not as if I went overboard, either); if you do the same thing with strong colour flare, it'll get stronger ... Veiling flare can be quite appealing anyway, at least if doesn't eat into detail too much.

Still, I'll have to think about a hood for the Elmar (and need a cap for it). Time to go digging ...
