We took a rest day on day five of our walk of the Chemin de Stevenson as Mademoiselle Anne was seriously injured and not up to the walking on the day. So, whilst I was waiting for the transport to La Bastide-Puylaurent I wandered around the hamlet.

This farmer was at work on the outskirts of the hamlet.

Whilst we waited for our transport, life continued in the little of village of Le Cheylard l’Evèque (population ~ 60).

The first of many French cows we were to come across on our little walk of the GR70 through the Massif Central. We were early in our days walking having yet to reach Ours so less than two kilometres from the start of the day at Le Puy-en-Velay.

I wonder if French cows are like the French and do not snack? Hence this cow just had to wait her turn at the feeder?

You can see the village of Coubon in the background. We had at this point started our climb out of the river valley.

Snapped through the bedroom window - a terrifying attachment on the combine harvester. The maize (corn) crops round here don’t go into human food, but instead the whole stalk, leaves and cobs are blitzed into tiny bits by this machine, and fed to cows.

The Domes by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

Once known as the ‘Dolly Twins’ but today referred to as The Domes are rather four unusual grain storage domes at the Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) in Goomalling.

The concrete domes, created in 1994, can store 44,000 tonnes of grain. Each dome is 39.6m in diameter and 19.8m high, in a perfect half-sphere. Walls are 350mm thick at the base graduated to 125mm at the top centre of the dome.
