Color Show Fireworks!

Location
Purgatory
I couldn't find a current thread for this, so I figured this would be a good time (especially for those of us in the US).

Last night, we visited our local open-air mall, hoping to catch their fireworks display. Unfortunately, there was a huge crowd (personal fireworks are banned in my county due to fire danger) so police had the entire area blocked from traffic. So we found a back road with a good view of the area, and luckily I always bring all my lenses because I needed the telephoto for this one. The fireworks were pretty low effort/quality so I merged 3 frames together hoping to get something halfway decent:

These were shot with Live Composite from a field behind our house. The park where our city launches the fireworks from is under construction so since you couldn’t sit there, they shot them higher than normal so that they can be seen from farther away. I love it, no traffic!

We went to a baseball tournament last night in Rapid City. They had fireworks after the games. Not the biggest display, but very nice. I have gotten to watch any fireworks for three years, so it was a treat. Hoping to catch some more tonight.

What looks like a bright light in the lower, center, part of the images is actually the Super Moon rising. If I had my 75-300mm with me, I would have tried to photograph that with the fireworks. Oh well…

The show lasted a little over a half hour, and I was late getting there as I had to convince myself I had one more year of oooohs and ahhhhs in me. Did I really want to deal with the masses and traffic? In the end the couch lost the argument and I hopped in the car to make the three minute drive into the belly of the beast. All shots were hand held since bringing and setting up a tripod would have pushed the energy requirement over the threshold it took to get in the car.

These are awesome! Please tell me, what does your shutter EXIF mean...4 seconds or 1/4 second?

I shoot with my Olympus EM1. It has Live Composite, which is a way to shoot long exposure images. Basically, you set your aperture and decide on the shutter speed. In this case, I think I was shooting at 2-4 seconds, I can’t remember exactly. Once you press the shutter button, it begins shooting individual frames, which get merged with each other, and you can watch the image build on the screen. Once you press the shutter button again, it finalizes the image by merging all of the photos into one image.

This makes fireworks and star trails east to shoot, but the exif data doesn’t come through correctly.

Wow, so that's what Live Composite means. Very interesting indeed, thank you!
