Show Modern Architecture

Here's a shot of the 60-story Hancock Tower in Boston - I'm guessing the architects were incorporating the shape of the church into its design so I composed it with the church's reflection.

I normally don't try stylized settings much but I quite liked its effect in the second shot.

Shot with my Nex-3 kit lens.

Kevin, your "stylized" second version really emphasizes the relationships between the Hancock Tower and these two other buildings. I didn't even notice the reflection of the church in your first:redface: even though you mentioned the architects' church theme... Gee, is the Hancock Tower a financial building....and if so, does that mean it's a corporate church? :eek:fftopic: ;) So my vote is 100% in favor of your stylized shot.

Great thread, this one is. From my point of view, I enjoy reading about the photographed architecture!

Wow, Will, it was certainly worth our wait to see these! Congratulations on your move being accomplished and upon these photos, too! If forced to choose, I'd say 3, 4 and 7 were my favorites.;)

Thanks guys. Glad you like them, and I agree on your choices, though the first one is a particular favourite of mine but perhaps less of an architecture picture.

Great set Will. Love the last one. You are fortunate to have such a great location to shoot in. Someday I'm going to take a week in London, get up at 6 every morning and shoot all day.

That's a really fine set Will. I particularly love the 4th shot (quite like the first too, but its less about architecture than just interesting shadows and light and good composition). But the 4th one, WOW. Incredible lines, almost Escher-esque and the people in the distance add to the surreal nature of it. It would be fun to convert to B&W and to maybe try to process the construction cranes out of it - they bring it back a little too quickly to reality for my taste. Without them and with the mood enhanced with a B&W conversion, that might even be a more amazing shot, and its already very very strong.

The Savill Building - Virginia Water, Surrey, UK

Went to Savill Gardens today armed with my NEX 5 and 16mm kit lens and the Leica X1. It was a particularly damp and gloomy day unfortunately! I find this building very difficult to photograph as it's so wide. In the Summer there are too many people walking in and out of it and in the Winter the weather is often gloomy like today. First one is the Leica rendition, last two from the NEX.

I really prefer the middle one. I think it has more to do with the light at that moment than either the camera or the field of view. I think having some blue poking through the sky and the interior lights coming through a bit more brightly, the whole structure really looks like some kind of spaceship or futuristic bird that's getting ready to take flight. The other two are a little too muted to have that effect and there's a bit more reality poking not the photos, from the woman walking through the first to the bike racks and walkway in the third.

Thanks for the input Ray. The second photo has more "tweaks". I changed the WB and used a little touch of blue filter for the sky! Looking at them through your eyes I see that you are right. This building is meant to resemble the undulations of a leaf. The inside is beautiful, with larch and oak being used for the ceiling and floor. I'm not sure that it's possible to photograph the inside, at least not when it's quiet ;)

Yup, my vote is for #2, initially. The other two do not show off the interior enough - however, there is something intriguing to me about your first - the young lady. I wonder if you did a few little different edits on #1 if you might not end up really liking it a great deal. You could try a 16:9 crop, cutting out a lot of that grey sky and see what you think. You could even end up not trying to get the whole facade in the image, as well. I find the young lady in black and white against the wall, with that roof line, doorway, etc., to be very compelling. Maybe crop up a bit, too. See what you think. It's a very alluring image, Christina - with the girl.

Savill Building

BB thanks for your input, much appreciated. I'm still working on a crop using Rosie in the frame! I've also been processing this view and trying to improve it from yesterday's pp. Does this view work any better?

I prefer your straight on view the best, thought it's always interesting to see more views of a beautiful building.

From the front you've got that wonderful front door which allows us in, yet also give us reflections and light - and you've got the wings of that wonderful roof! I'm not sure if this building reminds me of a skate or a manta ray or a birds wingspan...whatever it is feels integral to the first go round and I like it very much.

Hi Christilou,

That's quite the photographic challenge you've taken on. When I saw the first set, I liked the middle one as the increased contrast drew me into the building. But I was left wondering what it looks like from a different angle and "voila" here it is - also another fine shot :)

Thanks Admin for suggesting this page.

Have included a shot of the Petronas Twin Towers when I visited Malaysia last month. Make a mistake... should have made sure I included the peaks in the photo. Without them, you'd have no idea what I was taking a photo off.

Camera: Sony Nex5. 18-55mm standard lens.

Cheers,
Dan
